Application scenarios for smart screwdrivers
2019-01-23
With the rapid development of modern industry, the level of automation in China is steadily increasing, and the demand for production efficiency is growing ever higher. Consequently, the domestic market has a tremendous demand for equipment assembly capacity. However, most traditional electric tightening tools still rely heavily on manual labor to perform continuous assembly tasks. Not only does this approach fail to guarantee product quality, but the subsequent step of manual inspection after assembly undoubtedly slows down the advancement of production efficiency.
In the mechanical assembly industry—particularly in the automotive sector and engine assembly plants—the quality of threaded fastener assembly directly affects the overall vehicle assembly quality and driving reliability. As a result, an increasing number of automakers are moving away from manual assembly and opting instead for high-precision power tools. This is precisely where smart screwdrivers come into play.
Hollow-cup smart screwdriver
The smart screwdriver powered by a hollow-cup motor has now become an indispensable piece of equipment on automotive assembly lines. Its features—such as high reliability, high availability, and high precision—not only help overcome the shortcomings of manual labor and accelerate production efficiency, but most notably, the hollow-cup motor’s exceptionally high energy conversion efficiency enables it to deliver tremendous torque to the screwdriver.
Intelligent screwdrivers like the Atlas and Horsehead are typically designed to be handheld, because automotive assembly requires tightening screws from various angles, making the assembly process highly complex. At present, the level of robotics is still insufficient to fully replace human labor; thus, intelligent screwdrivers equipped with hollow-cup motors are widely used in the automotive assembly industry.

Servo intelligent screwdriver:
Another type is the smart screwdriver equipped with a servo motor. Due to the characteristics of the servo motor it’s paired with, the torque of the servo-powered smart screwdriver isn’t as high as that of a hollow-cup motor. However, precisely because of the unique features of the servo motor, this smart screwdriver is exceptionally well-suited for applications requiring precise screwing in various scenarios.
Specifically, it has the following characteristics and is commonly used in industries such as 3C and semiconductors.
(1) 12 task modes, each with up to 8 different torque parameters—users can configure the tightening process for each screw according to their needs. This feature is suitable for a wide variety of screw products.
(2) Simultaneously features torque control and angle control.
(3) Equipped with programmable I/O for process control, it can easily connect to other control devices to form automated production equipment.
(4) Equipped with a function to detect cross-tightening and missed tightening, enabling detailed analysis of the screw’s tightening status.
(5) Equipped with an interactive network interface for factory control, capable of storing large volumes of recent screw-tightening information.
(6) Various data collected during the tightening process can be displayed in graphical form.
(7) Freely switch between manual and automatic modes.
